How to replace a computer mouse? The future is now!

While corporations are creating the future, I will offer a fairly simple “innovative” solution that helps with computer work. All that is needed is to replace the mouse-type manipulator with the pen of a graphic tablet (like the Genius G-560 or Wacom Bamboo One). Please do not confuse graphic tablets with devices such as iPad. A pen tablet is only a device for inputting information into a computer. I will not scare the horror stories about carpal tunnel syndrome from working with the “mouse”. The pen and tablet are simply more comfortable to use, and the hand gets tired much less and gets tired more slowly. Tablets are inexpensive – because you do not need a professional model for drawing. You can even take a used one.

Working with windows of the operating system, editing photos, highlighting and copying text – all this improves significantly. In addition, the pen is equipped with a rocker button, which can be programmed to perform the functions of the right and left mouse buttons. If you purchase an advanced model, then on the tablet itself there will be several function keys and a touch ring. All this economy can also be adapted to work with the operating system or program (quick call applications, switch between windows or minimize-expand windows). The change of mouse on the tablet in my case occurred unnoticed. While editing photos and doing video editing, I once noticed that I also interact with other applications (not related to graphics) using the “pen stroke”. Yes, games such as Mashinarium, Angry Birds or Tiny Bang Theory are just made for the tablet (the “Angry Birds” are definitely not made for the mouse, originating as an application for the iPhone). For a week or two you will have a desire to grab the mouse (so remove it from the table!), And then you will begin to move smoothly between graphic, text, browser applications with increased comfort.

Using a “pen” it is very easy to transfer blocks of information in applications such as Power Point (or any equivalent), site designers, or Illustrator. You can do this with the mouse, of course, but then expect constant fatigue of the hand (a feeling of tension in the muscles) with the subsequent development of unpleasant diseases (it still scared!). You won’t be able to conduct a pen, as is the case with Nintendo wireless joysticks or Mezzanine sticks – after all, the tablet is still attached to the surface, but the trouble started. Do you know what else reminds pen management? If you or your children played the first Harry Potter game, then there is a task to draw certain characters on the screen with the mouse to activate the spell. Here is gradually interacting with a computer and turning into drawing certain characters.

If you use the Opera browser, you can go even further into the future. After all, Opera has long been offering gesture control with the mouse. But we replaced the mouse with a tablet. Will it work? It will work, but there is one difference. When gesture control in the browser is turned on, pressing and holding the right mouse button will bring up a large black circle in which possible actions will be entered. A simple gesture offers one movement by the manipulator, a complex one is divided into several movements. When using a tablet, on which you hold down the analog of the right mouse button, this window does not appear, but the gestures work. The disadvantage is that you have to remember the initial combinations. If you hold the pen and then move it in any direction, a circle appears with gestures of the second level. For owners of the touch screen, I inform you: you can do the same with your finger! Goolgle Chrome also has gestures. Install the Smooth Gestures extension and try to forget about the “hot keys” and clicking on the buttons. The application has an instruction (wrench icon – tools – extensions – smooth gestures – settings). There you can see standard gestures or come up with your own.

I do not specifically touch on the topic of handwriting. Windows 7 supports it for all applications (that is, you can really take and write an article or website address). But this topic is large and separate. Moreover, you will have to touch Mac OS with iOS, and you should not forget about Android. The manipulator type “mouse” for more than 40 years. It is high time to send this anachronism to a landfill. However, the attack on the conservative “crutch” is on all fronts. Changing desktops to laptops accustoms users to the touchpad, touch screens of tablets (no longer graphic, but full-fledged) teach fingers to interact with the interface. Gradually, naturalness wins. What can not but rejoice!
